Hey Neena, I absolutely love this piece! And not just because you mention my book in it. Lol! (Thanks for that.) I could see this piece turned into a beautiful short story that you could enter into the Commonwealth Short Story Prize, which will open up for submissions again next October. If you’re so inclined, I encourage you to do so.
I was surprised to see the word “coolIe,” as it’s a word we use in Jamaica as well. That shouldn’t have surprise me, though, since Jamaica and Guyana have a strong connection.
My Jamaican Indian friend calls me coolie gyal, I call him coolie bwoy. 😀
I’m glad you enjoyed this story, Dale, I had so much fun writing it. Thanks for the heads up about entering this (edited, right?) in the Commonwealth Short Story Competition.
Ha, I’ve been mentioning your book here and there in other places. How I wish I could make it to the Miami Book Fair, but c’est la vie.
By the way, my wife and I have a young Guyanese lady staying with us until this coming Monday. I was thinking of sending a signed copy of my book down to you. It probably depends on what part of Georgetown you live in as to whether she can get it to you or not. If you don’t mind saying, what’s the area you live in? If you’d rather send the info to me via email, here is my email address: dale@dalemahfood.com.
Ooooh, I’d looove a signed copy of your book! Thank you, Dale. Gee, my mother would enjoy that. And I’d tell the whole world!! I’m in Florida right now, helping my Aged Ma with daily chores and trying, unsuccessfully, to boss her around. I’m going to send this address to you tomorrow via email. Please say hello to your lovely wife and the Guyanese lady for me.
This is a joy, absolutely!!❣️
Thank you, Kath. I’m happy you feel it.
I wish more children could be taken there.
“...people are cruel to the horse.”
The child grabs it.
I want to meet this kid.
Every time I come up on this comment, I laugh.

I think the story needs to be between 2,000–5,000 words. If you's is not, you could always expand it.

Will do. By the way, if you're if your mom lives in Broward County, I can get the book to you that way.
I will hop to it soon, Dale. 😊
