I loved waking up to this! Books are everything, and I loved the lines about how you want to see them everywhere. On another note, I read a lot of Caribbean authors - are there any Guyanese ones who you would recommend in particular?

Thank you, Ramya! I don’t know what we’d do without books!

What’s sad is how we in Guyana moved from being a well-read society to people who don’t have much time for reading. What’s even sadder is that we barely know who our own writers are.

There’s Sharon Maas, I’ve read one of her books…The Secret Life of Winnie Cox…and her writing is delightful. I was told I should read Of Marriageable Age. She’s the most recent of writers.

The ones we keep hearing about are from ages ago. E. R. Braithewaite wrote To Sir With Love. Two writer whose books I would love to buy when I can afford to buy books again are Edgar Mittelholzer and Jan Carew. Anything written by them but especially My Bones And My Flute, and Black Midas.

Pauline Melville’s book, The Ventriloquist’s Tale, was published in 1997. It’s also on my To Be Bought or Borrowed list.
