Hello!!
What’ve you been up to? All good? Enjoying food, birthdays, celebrations? The glory of earth, sky, sea?
Me? I’ve been working on a series of e-books based on life in Guyana (South America…many up North confuse us with Ghana in Africa). Despite my joy in working on these books, something’s niggling, sort of worrying, not worrying. Here, I’ll share it with you.
The first book, Big Ole Home By De Sea (and all the other books to come)…
…they don’t follow no rules!!
Them books feel raw, unedited (for a reason).
Them books got small bits you can swallow fast-fast,
and big pieces you can chew ‘pon slow-slow.
Home (and all de other books to come) gon make de conservative reader cringe. They gon make that reader say, Mother & daughter shouldn’t behave that way.
Them books might make that reader want to rage, Woman, act your age, behave educated like your status has dictated.
Home (and all de other books to come) gon make critics sick, gon make critics utter with disdain, Oh what a disgrace.
Because them books ain’t a “digging into pain”.
They ain’t High-Minded Lit;
They don’t cuss, they don’t discuss post-colonial nothin’.
They don’t explain nothin’.
They hand you slices of life on a platter just so: Heh, take am, do wha’ you want wid am...here, take it, do what you want with it.
Home (and all de other books to come) gon turn you into a head-scratching visitor trekkin’ through a strange land where we-the-citizens speak in a Creolese you might understand. Or not.
But if you listen well, you gon hear the people tell about a poor nation in transition from folk beliefs to today technology.
You gon hear
them books shout,
them books hoot.
them books holler.
Them books is
loud laughter,
woman at play, jooking jokes at she-self and at everybody else, weyyy heyyy.
Them books is
woman
ludicrous,
dreaming,
longing,
lingering along the way.
Them books is celebration of
Woman
who choose
to be
who she want
to be.
And that, my friend, is the problem. These books rebel.
xoxoxo
